Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer for suggesting an attribution to the little-known Dirk Govertsz. on the basis of photographs. The artist is slightly better-known for his kitchen still lifes: one such, a Still life with lobster, fish and a hare, in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Bonn, includes a very similar suspended carp to the one in the upper left corner of the present picture.1 A photograph of a pure fish still life by him on a canvas of similar domensions to the present work, is kept at the RKD in The Hague.2
