Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Dr. Jørgen Wadum for identifying the panelmaker's mark on the reverse of this panel. This mark has thus far only been recorded on circa 10 panels, all painted by Dutch artists between 1632 and 1647. Several were produced by artists living in the overall delta region, which could suggest this mark to be of a local panel maker, maybe of Flemish origin, who may have introduced his native tradition of a house mark on his panels in the Seven Provinces. It is to be assumed that Van Strij, born in 1756, re-used a 17th Century panel for this work.
