  • A portrait of a gentleman, bust length, wearing a black suit with a white lace collar and a black hat, together with his wife, bust length, wearing a black dress with a white lace collar and a black bonnet, holding a rose in her right hand, near a balustrade with roses, in the open air
  • indistinctly signed (strengthened) and dated lower left on the balustrade: J v. merck F.. 1649
