Catalogue Note

The prime version of this composition is a painting by Marco d’Oggiono in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, in which the Madonna’s right breast is exposed (inv. no. R.F. 878; see D. Sedini, Marco d’Oggiono, Milan 1989, p. 49, cat. no. 15, reproduced in colour). Other school variants, in which the Madonna is shown fully clothed, are in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nîmes, and in the John and Mable Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida (for which see Sedini, op. cit., p. 185, cat. no. 92, and p. 191, cat. no. 98, both reproduced in colour).

Bears an old label on the reverse with an attribution to Leonardo da Vinci and an inventory number: 459.
