Catalogue Note
According to Marlier this painting is a second version of a painting of Saint Jerome in the Museum Mayer van den Bergh, Antwerp (inv. no. 32; see M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, vol XI, Leiden/Brussels 1974, p. 98, no. 272, reproduced plate 174). This primary version, of approximately the same measurements, was once attributed to Lambert Lombard (1506-1566). Marlier describes the present painting as also close to Jan van Hemessen (1490/1510-1575/9).
