This composition is derived from compositions by Pieter Brueghel the Younger in which a group of figures are gathered around in an extensive village landscape, see for example the Large Peasant Kermesse, in the Gemäldegalerie, Augsburg (inv. no. 5012), which is in its turn based on a woodcut by Hans Sebald Beham (see K. Ertz, Pieter Brueghel der Jüngere (1564-1637/38), Die Gemälde mit kritischem Oeuvrekatalog, Lingen 1988/2000, vol. II, pp. 852-4 and 902, cat. no. 1214, reproduced p. 854, fig. 682).
