Catalogue Note

This picture is a studio derivation of a lost work by Cornelis Schut (see G. Wilmers, Cornelis Schut (1597-1655), A Flemish Painter of the High Baroque, Brussels 1996, p. 95, cat. no. A31, reproduced plate A31). It could have been painted by Bernhardt Fuckeradt (1601-1662), who spent three years in Rubens's workshop from 1634-37 (op. cit., pp. 57-8). According to Wilmers this composition was very popular and consequently many replicas of it were made.

Bears an old auction label on the reverse recording an attribution to Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (lot 50).
