Catalogue Note

The oak support suggests that this picture most likely was painted after Van Laer's return from Italy to haarlem in 1639. The atmosferic lighting and composition based on a strong diagonal receding to the left, are characteristic of Van Laer's late paintings, which were an important influence on the young Phillips Wouwerman.
