Description

  • Hubert Robert
  • a wooded italian landscape with seated figures in the foreground and a villa beyond
  • red chalk

Provenance

Celia Tobin Clark, by whom given to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1935

Literature

Phyllis Hattis, Four Centuries of French Drawings in The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, 1977, p. 150. no. 109, reproduced

Catalogue Note

In her entry on the drawing in the San Francisco catalogue (see Literature below), Phyllis Hattis suggests a date in the 1760s on stylistic and compositional grounds, although she notes that Robert continued to use Italian subjects long after his return to France.  This view seems to have been drawn on the spot, but it is not possible to identify the villa.
