Catalogue Note
This charming and freely-drawn work has similarities with a drawing by Gillot of The Embarkation for Cythera in the collection of Dr. and Mrs. Freddy Homburger (see Dewey F. Mosby, 'Claude Gillot's Embarkation for the Isle of Cythera and its Relationship to Watteau', Master Drawings, vol. XII, no. 1 (Spring 1974), p. 49-56, pls. 38-39). In a letter to the owner of the present drawing, dated 25 June, 2006, Mr. Mosby accepts its attribution to Gillot, suggests a date of circa 1710 and proposes that it may have been a design for the backdrop of a play.
