- Nicolas Lancret
- study of a young man leaning forward, wearing a cape
- bears inscription on the backing: MD 384 and in another hand: Lancret
- red chalk, heightened with white chalk, on buff paper; laid down, the backing sheet visible at left and bottom edges with light traces of the hand and feet made up in red chalk by a later hand.

Catalogue Note
This figure is totally characteristic of Lancret's style and of his figure types, and could have been used in any of his paintings of Fêtes galantes. A closely similar figure stands behind a woman in Lancret's painting of Mlle Camargo Dancing (fig.1), now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington (see Mary Tavener Holmes, Nicolas Lancret, exhibition catalogue, New York, Frick Collection and Fort Worth, Kimbell Art Museum, 1991, cat. no. 5, reproduced pl. 9).
