Catalogue Note
This drawing is close in style, technique and measurements to one representing Pagans worshipping before an altar, sold Amsterdam, Sotheby Mak van Waay, 16 November 1981, lot 132 and also to another, Captives being burned on a pyre, also sold Amsterdam, Sotheby Mak van Waay, 21 March 1977, lot 71. Both of those drawings were attributed to Romeyn de Hooghe, but are not particularly similar to designs that can be securely connected with any of his prints.
A fascinating alternative is, however, presented by comparison with prints published, and probably engraved, by Theodor de Bry, notably the ilustrations to Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues' account of Laudonnière's famous voyage to Florida, the Brevis Narratio (Frankfurt-am-Main, 1591); the figure types and general compositional arrangements in those prints, as well as the exotic subject-matter, are strikingly similar to the present work (see P. Hulton, The Work of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, 2 vols., London 1977, vol. II, plates 103-134). This drawing, and the other two to which it relates, certainly bear no obvious resemblance to the known work of Le Moyne de Morgues, but the possibility that they are by de Bry should certainly not be ruled out.
