Catalogue Note
A similarly executed Roman view by van Bloemen, with the same form of signature, is in the van Regteren Altena Collection, Amsterdam (see A. Zwollo, Hollandse en Vlaamse veduteschilders te Rome 1675-1725, Assen 1973, p. 33, fig. 42). Having travelled by way of Paris and Lyon, Jan Frans van Bloemen and his brother Pieter arrived in Rome in 1688; the former remained there until his death 61 years later, establishing himself as one of the leading exponents of the type of Claudian view painting that was so popular with collectors throughout Europe during the late 17th and early 18th century.
