Catalogue Note
This was a subject explored by Schut in several media: a painting, an etching and another drawing are all known (see G. Wilmers, Cornelis Schut (1597-1655): A Flemish Painter of the High Baroque, Turnhout 1996, cat. nos. A29, A29a, A82a, reproduced pp. 360, 395). Although most of the artist's drawings are rather freer and more Rubensian than this, there are similarities in handling with a design for a tapestry border, in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (see Wilmers, op. cit., p. 427, fig. 13).
