Catalogue Note
After the death of Adriaen van Ostade in 1685, a large group of his figure studies was inherited by his pupil, Cornelis Dusart. These drawings were used by Dusart in his own work, and he also sometimes worked them up with additional washes in ink or watercolor. It can on occasions be extremely hard to distinguish between original color by Ostade himself, and later additions by Dusart, and it is certainly possible that at least some of the color in the present drawing is by Dusart. For further information on these reworked drawings, see B. Schnackenburg, Adriaen van Ostade, Isack van Ostade. Zeichnungen und Aquarelle, Hamburg 1981, vol. I, pp. 62-3.
