Catalogue Note

Dr. Fritz Koreny has kindly informed us that he considers this drawing to originate from the broad circle of Lucas Cranach the Younger.  These studies may well relate to a composition including fighting roebucks.  There are a number of examples of depictions of fighting animals in 16th-century German art, including notable prints of wild horses by Hans Baldung (Mende 77-78; 1534).
