Description
- recto: designs for a fountainverso: architectural studies
- pen and brown ink and wash, over traces of red chalk (recto); pen and brown ink (verso)
Catalogue Note
This very charming sheet of studies is most probably for a fountain, although the scale is uncertain and it could be for a table ornament. The façade on the verso incorporates broken curved pediments which show knowledge of Michelangelo's Medici tombs. It is extremely difficult to attribute such drawings, and there is relatively little published comparative material to study, but on the basis of the figure types and style, it seems Florentine and of the time of artists such as Tribolo, Ammanati and Dosio. For examples, see A. Morrogh, Disegni di architetti fiorentini, 1540-1640, Florence 1985.
