Catalogue Note
This drawing must have been made between September 1785 and February 1786, when the sitter visited Berlin in the course of an educational trip that she made with her companion, Sophie Becker. It was at the publishers Nicolai that the travellers met Chodowiecki. The poetess's accounts of this trip and many others are amongst the most celebrated travel writings of the Goethezeit. The drawing comes from the collection of the Haller family, who also previously owned letters by Elisa von der Recke's sister, later Reichsgräfin von Medem.
