Catalogue Note
The same view was depicted by Ducros several times, between about 1782 and 1787 (see J. Zutter et al, Abraham-Louis-Rodolphe Ducros, Un peintre suisse en Italie, exhibition catalogue, Lausanne 1998, cat. no. 1, p.49). These watercolors, like the present sheet, show the Arch as it stood before being restored at the order of Pius VII, in 1823. This project replaced any missing sections of the marble with travertine, thereby allowing the structure to be free-standing, as we see it today.
