Condition
Hinged so that the top edge cannot easily be examined. Remains of old backing paper in various places, verso. Repaired losses bottom centre, bottom left, and towards bottom of right edge. A few small holes and thin spots top centre, and centre of sheet. Some light stains in centre and elsewhere. Some minor foxing and surface dirt, but ink still good and strong. Overall effect better and stronger than catalogue illustration. Unframed.

As Dr. Jaap Bolten has kindly informed us, this drawing is one of five known versions of a Bloemaert drawing of circa 1591-3. The composition represents Earth, and is one of a series of four allegorical representations of the elements.
