Description

  • Carlo Maratta
  • half-length study of a running figure, with a secondary study of an arm and shoulder
  • red chalk on blue paper

Provenance

Sir Gilbert Lewis (died 1883);
by descent to his nephew, Sir Henry Duff Gordon, Bt., by whom sold, London, Sotheby's, 19 February 1936, as part of a volume, lot 107 (£100 to R.E.A Wilson) (for an article on the Duff Gordon collection and, in particular, the Tiepolo drawings, see A.P. Oppé, 'A fresh group of Tiepolo drawings', in Old Master Drawings, no. 18, September 1930, pp. 29-44).

Condition

Unframed. Laid down. The sheet appears to have been cut at the left and probably right edges. There are some small, isolated areas of slight discolouration in the upper centre, on the figure's cheek, and the wrist of the out-streched hand. There, however, are barely noticeable, and overall the sheet is in very good condition, the chalk still strong and fresh.
