  • red chalk, over traces of black chalk, heightened with white chalk; laid down on an old mount bearing an attribution in red ink, lower left: Di Baroccio

Condition

Laid down on old mount. Small hole at the centre of the upper edge; some surface dirt and a few stains, especially around the edges of the sheet. Sold framed.

Catalogue Note

Although this study cannot be connected with any of the painted work of Giovanni da San Giovanni, the distinctive facial type and soft modelling of this drawing appear to be his.  Mythological creatures such as this satyr feature prominently in his frescoes, such as those in the Salone degli Argenti in Palazzo, Pitti, Florence.1
