Description

  • Marco Pino, called Marco da Siena
  • the baptism of christ
  • bears old attribution in pen and brown ink: di Marco di Siena.
  • pen and brown ink and brown and blue wash, heightened with partly oxidised white, three strips of paper added by the artist at the top and both sides

Condition

The drawing is laid down on an old (late 18th century) mount. It is inscribed on the backing, in pencil: ''396 Marco da Siena''. The strips added by Marco Pino are visible to the left and right edges. There are a number of creases; the paper does not seem to be stuck down properly and may have more than one sheet backing it. There is some slight oxidazation, but overall, the drawing is in reasonable condition and the washes and ink are quite fresh.

Catalogue Note

This drawing, which bears a traditional attribution to Marco Pino, seems to be a preparatory study with differences for his painting in the apse of the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Naples (fig. 1).1  The final composition includes many other scenes besides the baptism represented in this drawing.  Such complex compositions seem to be a main characteristic of Marco Pino's late work.  The painting is not documented but is now believed to date between 1566 and 1569.  Northern landscapes such as the one in the background of the present drawing do appear in Marco Pino's paintings and the use of blue wash, which is very striking, may also have been inspired by Northern art.
