Catalogue Note
One of the dominant forces in the German art world of the years around 1900, Liebermann led the Modernist movement in Germany away from the literary art of the 19th century. He was greatly influenced by Dutch and French painting, and spent most of his summers accumulating plein-air studies, which he then worked up into paintings in his studio during the winter months.
Many of these studies from nature, the present work included, were made during the course of Liebermann's numerous trips to Holland, a country that was to provide him with the inspiration for some of his most important and socially penetrating works.
The attribution has been kindly confirmed by Drs. Margreet Nouwen.
