Catalogue Note

This page is clearly related to a number of Giani drawings in the Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York, which seem to have come from a sketchbook and which are composed, like this one, of decorative motifs and copies after works of art in Bologna and Rome.1  The New York drawings can be dated between 1811 and 1814.  The Cooper Hewitt holds a large collection of works by Giani, which came to the museum from Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt who had bought them from Giovanni Piancastelli.  The four scenes which Giani copied on this sheet are after Jacopo della Quercia's sculpted reliefs around the main portal of the Bolognese church of San Petronio.

1. See Anna Ottani Cavina, Felice Giani, Milan 1999, vol. II, p. 761, no. A.1.12 and in particular p. 804, no. A1.312, reproduced fig. 1155, which contains other copies after the portals of  San Petronio.
