Catalogue Note

Van Cleve made a number of drawings of Italianate views.  Some of these, like the view of Naples, sold New York, Sotheby's, 8 January 1991 (lot 29), are topographically accurate, and were used as the basis for prints, while others are clearly capricci.  A good example of the latter type, signed with a monogram and dated 1588, and very comparable with the present work not only in conception but also in the figure types, was sold, London, Sotheby's, 22 November 1974, lot 23.
