Condition

Paper a little discoloured, especially towards centre, but colours good and fresh and overall condition good. Unframed.

Catalogue Note

This watercolour is a version by Dusart of a watercolour in the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, which was always held in the museum's collection as a work by Adriaen van Ostade, but which Schnackenburg gave to his brother Isack.1  The Rotterdam drawing, which must be slightly cropped, does not include the top of the gable, and is also slightly less extensive on both sides. Dusart made numerous versions and copies of the works of both the Ostades, and on the death (in 1685) of Adriaen, who had been his teacher, he seems to have inherited the remaining contents of the Ostade studio, including many drawings by both brothers.
