Catalogue Note
This drawing of Saint Lawrence was one of five treatments of the subject in an album that was probably assembled betweenn 1783 and 1797. The album was apprently sold by Giandomenico's uncle, Francesco Guardi, to the writer and collector Horace Walpole. In the five drawings, Giandomenico varied the position of the saint's arms and head and the placement of his attribute, the grill; only in the Baer drawing, however, does the artist give the saint a halo.
