Description
- Giovanni Battista Busiri
- a pair of views: the Colosseum and the Temple of Vesta, Tivoli
- both gouache
Provenance
Studley Priory, Oxfordshire
Condition
Both sold in 18th Century English carved and gilded wooden frames.
The Temple of Vesta with some slight abrasion to the very edges of the sheet, and some mild water-type staining along the lower right margin. Otherwise in excellent condition;
The Colosseum with some small cracks and minor losses to the gouache, concentrated near the upper right corner, and also to the centre right. These small losses, however, are mainly in the light blue of the sky, and are therefore not particularly noticeable. There are some very minor, pale grey small spot stains in the upper section, mainly to the right. Otherwise the condition is very good indeed.
The backing board of the Colosseum bears a label stating:
'J. Richiardi,/Carver and Gilder,/Picture Frame-Maker/To their Royal Highnesses/The Prince of Wales/and/The Bishop of Osnaburg/At the corner of Swallow-street, Piccadilly,/oppofite St. James's Church, London
