This painting repeats a work by Reynolds of circa 1773-4 in the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum. That portrait is a half-length whereas the present portrait portrays only the head and shoulders. Miss Ridge was the daughter of Counsellor Ridge, an Irish lawyer.
