Catalogue Note
The sitter was the third son of Sir Henry Bridgeman, 1st Baron Bradford, and Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Rev. John Simpson of Stoke Hall, co. Derby. He was born May 13, 1763 and assumed, by act of parliament, the surname and arms of Simpson only. He died June 5, 1850. He was married, first, on June 3, 1784 to Henrietta, daughter of Sir Thomas Worsley; she died in 1791. He married, secondly, on November 27, 1793, Grace, daughter of Samuel Estwicke.
