Catalogue Note
Entre 1889 et 1900, Henri Martin subit l’influence de deux des grands mouvements picturaux qui dominent le paysage artistique en France à la fin du XIXe siècle : le Pointillisme dont il adopte les petites touches juxtaposées et les couleurs claires, et le Symbolisme (surtout Puvis de Chavannes) qui l’inspire dans le choix de ses sujets. Les titres des tableaux qu’il expose à cette époque « Muse », « Orphée », « Apparition », « Enfant à la lyre », montrent son attachement à l’iconographie symboliste. Par ailleurs, grand lecteur, Henri Martin aime illustrer ou représenter ses écrivains préférés : Dante, Byron, Musset ou Baudelaire. A partir de 1902, il évolue et va se consacrer à la peinture de paysages.
