Catalogue Note

This magnificent pear-shaped diamond together with the following lot 438, the magnificent cushion-shaped diamond of 102.54 carats, was originally part of a single jewel. In 1878 Chaumet set the cushion-shaped diamond as part of an aigrette and the pear-shaped diamond as part of a pendant/bracelet centre for La Paiva. In 1888 the stones were remounted for Princess Katharina Henckel von Donnersmarck. The sheer size, colour and cut of these two stones are remarkable and they are very reminiscent of the fabled diamonds of India.
