Catalogue Note

Wallace's recent work has focused on female subjects particularly in response to Edgar Degas's iconic bathers and ballerinas and her work intends to 'subvert the convention of the male gaze upon the female form to reveal the ennui, tension and hostility experienced by the artist's model' (Wallace, 2005). In the present work, the complex dialogue between viewer and subject is highlighted by the ambiguous title which initially appears to strike a playful note but which is at the same time sinister and unsettling.

Having studied at the Belfast College of Art, Wallace has exhibited at galleries such as The Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast; The Arts Society of Ulster and The Royal Ulster Academy and her work is held in the collection of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
