Catalogue Note

The "Nieuwe Figuratie" (New Figuration) is a description of a new group of artists that emerged from abstract art of the 1950s and that were interested in figurative elements of painting during the 1960s and 1970s. As the name suggests, these artists such as Roger Raveel, Reinier Lucassen, Alphons Freymuth, Raoul de Keijzer, Etienne Elias and Yvan Theys wanted to use figuration in a new manner, without working towards realism. They strived for the removal of the traditional contrast between figurative and non-figurative art.

Although they seldom worked together as a group, the work of these artists clearly shows a similar interest towards the practice of painting. Especially interested in the relationship between realism and abstraction and the dual meaning of the image and reality, the artists of the "Nieuwe Figuratie" create a new space- a depth without the use of traditional perspective with many silhouette forms and strange objects.

Especially in the 1970s the work of Raveel, Freymuth, Lucassen and Theys reveals similarities. In a time when minimal art, conceptual art, video and performances are popular, the fascination for painting and figuration is striking. Looking at the next lots... we see that the artists combine many styles in one composition. With the figurative and realist elements, a tension is built up used with sharp contours and pop art elements as the representation of everyday used objects.
