Osler of Birmingham were the world's largest manufacturer of glass furniture in the 19th century. The design for these etagères first appears in the Osler design book as number 2817, dated September 1882, where it is described as an 'oblong whatnot'. The shelves have a teak wood carcass supported by an electro-plated silver metal frame clad with strips of cut and mirrored glass. The bold highly cut circular corner pieces are a slightly later modification to the original. Another etagère is in the collection of the Birmingham and City Museum and Art Gallery.
