A Belgian mahogany dressing table stamped Chapuis first quarter 19th century

the upper section with a swivelling and sliding mirror flanked by tapering supports surmounted by neoclassical female bust, above two later hinged gilt-bronze candlearms, above one long drawer containing a sliding baize-lined top flanked by a tambour panelled to simulate two drawers, above four further short drawers with lion masks ring-pull handles, the stiles with neo-classical female caryatid supports, on block feet

A virtually identical dressing table also stamped Chapuis, was sold as lot 466, from the Château de Beloeil, Belgium, Sotheby's Amsterdam, 16 & 17 June 1992.

Jean-Joseph Chapuis (1765-1864), received master circa 1796. Active in Brussels, he established himself in the Rue de Borgval. He figured in Almenachs du Commerce of the Empire period until 1824 and worked very closely with his Parisian colleagues.
