Catalogue Note
The present lot relates to a set of six armchairs of similar form supplied by John Linnell to the 5th Duke of Argyll for Inveraray Castle, Scotland, illustrated, Helena Hayward and Pat Kirkham, William and John Linnell, 1980, vol.II, p. 46, pl.89-90. The design combines neo-classical details drawn from French designers such as the architect J.C. Delafosse, whose drawing designs in gout-Grec were a major influence, with the lightness of touch associated with the work of Robert Adam of this period.
