A pair of late George III grained beech tub chairs

with arched upholstered backs and down-swept arms with padded sides, raised on square sabre legs ending in later castors

The present pair of chairs is of a form known as a `Curricle Chair' after the Roman Magistrate or consul`s seat and called as such by Thomas Sheraton in his The Cabinet Dictionary, London, 1803 and in his Designs for Household Furniture, London 1812. The form was popularised by Gillows of Lancaster who produced many versions most frequently with a show-wood frame and caning.
