Description

  • Van Cleef & Arpels
The flexible three-row strap designed as a ribbon mystery-set with numerous square-cut sapphires, decorated with a pair of semi-circular links set with tapered baguette and square-cut diamonds, the hinged center concealing a rectangular dial, mounted in platinum,  backwind, bracelet length 6 3/8 inches, signed Van Cleef & Arpels, Paris, assay marks.

Condition

The total diamond weight is approximately 3.35 carats. Manual movement, back-wind, running. There are scratch numbers B3128V as well as the Van Cleef & Arpels signature on the ends of the bracelet at the points where it connects to the dial on the reverse. The watch opens by pressing the diamond-set circles toward each other. The sapphire-set "shutters" open to reveal the watch face. The sapphires are very well matched and are set in an extremely flexible and well-made grid bracelet. In good condition overall and fitted with a safety closure. See Important Notice Regarding Condition of Watches on page 335 of the catalogue.

Prospective purchasers are reminded that, unless the catalogue description specifically states that a stone is natural, we have assumed that some form of treatment may have been used and that such treatment may not be permanent. Our presale estimates reflect this assumption.

Catalogue Note

An identical bracelet-watch, or "montre à volets", set completely with diamonds, dating from 1939, is illustrated by Sylvie Raulet, Van Cleef & Arpels, p. 308. A second watch of slightly later date, composed of a gold strap and mystery-set sapphire circles, is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Van Cleef & Arpels, Musée de la Mode et du Costume, Paris, 1992, p. 161, no. 322.
