first edition. This work was planned as a sequel to Wood's Ruins of Palmyra, which had been published to great acclaim in 1753 (see lot 3313). "With the Ruins of Balbec following Palmyra in 1757, Britain was firmly placed in the forefront of archaeological studies'' (Harris).
