Catalogue Note

first german edition. Struys travelled as far as Japan on his first journey from 1647 to 1655; to the Mediterranean from late 1655 to mid-1657 on his second and into Russia, Persia and Arabia on his third voyage which lasted from September 1668 to late 1673. The work was first published in Dutch in 1676. The plates, as well as capturing fairly conventional city views, depict scenes of death by skinning, roasting, burial alive and being tossed by elephants.
