Catalogue Note
first edition. Shaw worked as chaplain at the English factory in Algiers from 1720 to 1733, and during that time travelled in Egypt, Palestine, Cyprus and north Africa. His Travels provide accurate descriptions of antiquities, geography and natural history. In 1746 he published a Supplement, in which he responded to the adverse criticisms of his work made by Richard Pococke in his Description of the East, published 1743 and 1745 (see lot 3250).
