Catalogue Note
first edition. a rare large paper copy. Described by Gibbon as of "superior learning and dignity", this work resulted from the author's travels between 1737 and 1740. He and Norden apparently passed one another in the night, the latter going up the Nile, Pococke returning from Philae. The first volume is devoted to Egypt, the second, part 1, to Palestine, Syria, Mesopotamia, Cyprus and Crete, and part 2 to the Greek islands, Asia Minor, Thrace, Greece and other parts of Europe.
