folio (302 x 207mm.), [14], 473, [29]pp., illustration: engraved coat-of-arms on title-page, 2 engraved plates of Slav warriors, engravings in text of coats-of-arms and 2 Slav alphabets, woodcut initials, head-pieces and ornaments, printer's woodcut device at the end, binding: eighteenth-century speckled calf gilt, sides panelled with fleurons at corners, spine gilt in compartments, a few passages of text deleted (see below), damp-stain in lower margin of first few leaves, binding slightly rubbed 

Catalogue Note

first edition of the first comprehensive historical survey of the slav people. Mauro Orbini, a Benedictine monk, was born and lived for most of his life in Dubrovnik. This copy has been expurgated by the Inquisition, often with the deletion of certain names (as for example on p.165), sometimes of longer passages (for example p.123).
