first edition. The Earl of Macclesfield was one of the original subscribers to this work. La Mottraye, a Frenchman, lived in England for many years and on his return from his travels received a pension from George I. The third volume was not published until 1732 and therefore is often not present. A French translation of the first two volumes was published in 1727. Many of the plates are signed by William Hogarth.
