first edition. Giovio, now statuary guardian of the Laurentian library, was the self-styled "Medicean Livy", even down to the apparent loss of certain books of his history (in his case the loss came in the fall-out from the sack of Rome). This posthumous publication, edited by Dionysius Somentius, is a dedicated examination of Lake Como and environs, and is particularly fulsome in its praise of the region's wines, "facile inveteratur et in multos saepe annos perdurat; odoratius, quum maxime canescit, tanta potestate".
