Catalogue Note

This is an extension of Richard Eden's edition of 1555 and although the heart of the work is still the translation of Anghiera's De orbe novo and Oviedo's History of the West Indies, it contains much fresh material, added by Richard Willes. This includes Maffei’s account of Japan and Pereira’s description of China (the first account in English). Anghiera was a contemporary and associate of Columbus, Vasco de Gama, Amerigo Vespucci and Ferdinand Magellan. This, and his privileged position within the Spanish Council for the Indies, placed him in a position of unrivalled authority to construct an account of the explorers' discoveries.
