Catalogue Note

This exquisitely rendered watercolor is part of a series of works that Leonora Carrington executed in 1933 at the age of sixteen, probably while attending boarding school in Florence, Italy. The first in the series is an allegorical depiction of the moon as a levitating goddess in a sumptuous blue harem outfit. The other two are titled Sisters of the Moon: Diana and Sisters of the Moon: Indovina Zingara. This is an exciting fourth addition to this important group which reveals, in stunning fashion, how even at a young age the artist was preoccupied with myth, magic and the sacred role of women. With her radiating mane of hair and delicate facial features, Fantasia looks remarkably like a self-portrait of the artist.
