Condition

The canvas is unlined and well stretched. There is faint craquelure throughout the work visible under raking light but the surface appears to be stable. Under ultra violet light, there is a slightly opaque varnish on the work. There are also several areas of inpainting throughout the work. There is a 6 in. diagonal line in the upper right quadrant and a 3 in. vertical line extending from the lower edge in the center. There is also another 5 in. diagonal line in the lower left quadrant. There are also several retouchings along the lower edge consistent with frame abrasions. There is a 12 in. line of inpainting starting at the virgin's neck and extending to the cuffs of her sleeves. There is another 9 in. vertical line extending from the virgin's right sleeve downwards with a 10 in. horizontal line of inpainting crossing through this. There are scattered areas of inpainting throughtout her robe and in her hair. There are several areas of paint loss on the work that have been stabilized with the varnish especially in the top center above her crown. Most of the retouchings appear to have been done to stabilize extensive craquelure.
